Why I am not a rockstar va and if you are asking for one you suck.
I have been running my own VA business for about three years now but have been working in a corporate environment for years before so I shake my head at many things in this weird world of self employment in the social media age.
One of those things is a term I have come across on some of the many Facebook groups I am part of - the term 'Rock Star VA'.
This label annoys me to no end. But let's just do some research first. Perhaps I am judging unnecessarily and jumping to my own conclusions?
Let's have a look at some of the gems I have come across when people are searching for a Virtual Assistant...
"I am on the hunt for a Tech VA for one of my clients. here is the posting:
Looking for a rockstar Tech VA to join successful online coaching & personal development business. (Ontraport wizard, squeeze page genius & all around tech master)
Are you a super-fast Ontraport wiz with a keen eye for details who can set up a virtually error-free campaign in 10-15 minutes? Can you set up a squeeze page in 20 minutes? Do you know your way around Optimize Press with your eyes closed? Are you proficient in platforms like LeadPages, Wordpress & Clickfunnels?
Have you set up member portals and affiliate centers using Ontraport before? Are you an all around Tech wiz with an eye for detail, a flair for design and a touch of creative intuition? Do you always have ideas for all things Tech can be done more efficiently?"
This is but a quarter of the full list of requirements. So basically they are looking for a superfast tech genius who can work in the dark.
Here is another gem:
I am looking for a new rockstar VA. We are growing and need your help 💪🏻💯💥. Yes, you!
Here are the details, look forward to connecting :))))
We are a fast-paced, web based, lifestyle company which for you, my friend, means
that you should be computer savvy. Savvy is actually an understatement. You must
be rocking the keyboard harder than Dwayne Johnson
You will be busy. The job is fast- paced. No lazies or crazies, please.
You will have a task list every week but you wouldn't be micro managed because
CEO don’t got time for that. Therefore, you must be an excellent, efficient single -
tasker, critical thinker, quick decision maker and approach the situation with get
s*^$ done attitude.
Looking for hustle and positive attitude -#nobaddays
Apparently a wrestler with no mental health issues ever or need for any time off would suit their purpose. Funny I thought time off improved mental health. But I might be wrong.
Have a look at this one...
"ROCKSTAR VA NEEDED THIS WEEK: Seeking to buy a block of hours from a Rockstar VA to start tomorrow. Need someone who is very resourceful, excellent communication skills, what I call tech saavy i.e. can set up Mailchimp autoresponders, post and schedule blog on WordPress, can use some aspects of Divi theme plugin on WP, event planning skills preferred, can maintain a high level of confidentiality (I'm working with high level foreign leaders at UN this week), and can make things happen. Serious and qualified inquiries ONLY. If this sounds like you, please inbox me with your credentials. Thank you!"
So Rock Star VAs apparently also need to be available at the drop of a hat and be able to work with Very Important People. Just like the very next day! Hopefully the VA can spell better than the boss in this case.
Last one for today:
"Hey everyone! I am looking for a rockstar overseas VA! needs excellent Internet, great phone skills, background in scheduling. I'm avoiding the Upwork route as that is not working well for me. Any leads would be awesome, and a little info about the person you're recommending!"
Mmm an overseas VA. I wonder why overseas. Perhaps because overseas from wherever she is is a third world country and those VA's charge a pittance compared to us poor suckers in the West?
Can you imagine these job descriptions and requirements in a job post on Seek? No because it is against the law to discriminate. Also do you notice how none of these ads mention salary offered. Probably because it's not something to brag about.
In the UK Glassdoor reports the average VA earns 11 pounds per hour. The average Filipino VA earns 3 USD per hour. VAs run their own business so there is no sick leave, paid holidays, pension plans or insurance - we have to take care of all of that ourselves.
Another point I would like to make is that I am definitely no Rock star. I am 45 years old. I work from home. Sometimes in my nightgown. At odd hours of the day or night. And when I'm not working I'm cooking and cleaning and running after children. So the odd hours is as close as it gets to the life of a rock star.
So next time you do a shout out for a Rock star VA remember this. Somewhere out there is a VA who wants to, and maybe will, post a vomit emoji.
